Customer Reviews:
Early Impressions - Recommended for Newcomers, Past MLB Show Fans its debateable to upgrade By prsmooth
After playing for about 2-3 hours, here are my impressions thus far comparing MLB '13 and MLB '12 vita versions:
I played a game in Playoff, Season, and Franchise mode. I'll try to provide as much detail as possible.
If you are new to the Show or had difficulties with understanding the mechanics of previous games, I would recommend getting this one as it is more beginner friendly with a beginner mode which helps you understand the basics.
Graphics-wise, MLB '13 is probably slightly better than MLB '12, but not by much. There is not a considerable difference. However, faces seemed a bit more detailed and stadium had a little bit more detail when comparing both versions. With that said, the game looks smoother than MLB '12 (i.e. less jaggies).
MLB '13 has included short cutscenes (animations) for home runs, strikeouts, fielded plays, and so forth. So if you were dissappointed in MLB 12 lacking in cutscenes, you'll be happy with this version.
In Mlb '13 they added more camera views, so you have more options to choose from when pitching, hitting, and fielding.
They also included a pressure-sensitive option for throwing on a fielded play. When you field a ball, a guage shows up which will show how much strength you will add to your throw depending on how long you hold the button. Then when you release, you have to press again to throw the ball. So throwing errors will be based on your gauge meter, and not arbitrarly like in MLB '12.
The one thing I am dissapointed in this game, which I thought was going to be improved in MLB '13 (vita), is the commentary. The commentary seemed to have digressed in this installment. For example, at the end of half inning, there is no recap made by the commentors - there is dead silence after the third out. There is still play-by-play commentary, but less "side commentary" or filler between pitches - I like to hear the side commentary in between pitches and/or plays as it adds more to the realism of experiencing a broadcasted game (particularly, the recap after 3 outs). I think Mlb '12 did this better in that regard.
Season mode seemed essentially the same as last years. In Franchise mode they added some more options for budget and also option for scouting players.
One of the few reasons I decided to get this game was for playoff mode. In Playoff mode, you have the option to choose from the standard 1 wildcard team per League or the new 2 wildcard team playoff structure. You can choose several teams you want to play and also teams that you want to include as CPU players in the other spots in the bracket.
When playing playoff mode, you can see the Playoff logos and also they try to mimic the playoff atmosphere in the audience with chants when you are batting and pitching. Overall, I think it is a nice addition. However, one thing I did notice was that I wasn't able to save a game in progress like Season or Franchise mode - maybe it didn't come up, but I didn't see the option to save. I was only able to save a playoff game after it was done.
At the end, I have mixed feelings about it. I was debating if to give it 3 or 4 stars. They added extra a few features made but digressed in commentary and there was only a slight improvement in graphics.
For people playing the MLB the show on the vita for the first time, this is the version to get. For those that have MLB '12, its a bit of a harder decision if the extras are enough to warrant an upgrade, maybe more justifiable as the price drops.
UPDATE 3/7/2013:
I put in more hours into this game and it is growing on me more. I still maintain my 4 star rating.
One thing I do like is the fact when you hit a home run, the ball ricochets off the bleachers or billboard. I don't remember seeing this in MLB '12 The Show, so it's a cool addition.I'm somewhat new to the franchise - early limited review By Christopher
First off, I must confess to you all that my experience with the MLB The Show franchise is very limited. I have always stayed away from sports video games because I suck at them. I'm awful. Playing against me online is a sure win for you. I can play the game in real life but not in the virtual world. Until now!
I picked up the game (PS Vita) first thing this morning and have been on it non-stop for the last 3.5 hours. The addition of the beginner mode I found very helpful. A few weeks ago I picked up a used copy of MLB 12 for $5 and had been trying to figure it out. MLB 12 was great but I had such a difficult time figuring out pitching and hitting that I almost gave up on the game. I did enjoy it enough however to warrant trying MLB 13. Maybe the limited skills that I acquired on MLB 12 are making 13 that much easier or it's the beginner mode that is making the game so much more enjoyable, I don't know nor do I care. Whatever the case I am already enjoying this game. I've started on the RTTS and Franchise modes both of which have seen numerous improvements over 12. There is so much customization it's almost overwhelming - in a good way. Obviously there is quite a lot that I haven't seen and perhaps in a few more weeks of playing my thoughts will change but right now I am enjoying it far more than I enjoyed 12.
This being the second release of MLB The Show on the Vita the game has shown some performance improvements in both graphics and gameplay. The Vita has been out for over a year now and I think developers have worked out the issues and figured out how to create a great gaming experience.
When I have played more of the game I will update my review but so far it's all systems go.
Update March 7, 2013-
In the RTTS I sincerely miss the side commentaries. They added color to the game and made it feel more real to me. For most of the game there is virtually nothing from the sports commentators, just awkward silence.
The game does play more smoothly from MLB12 (from what I can notice in my limited exposure).Decent game for the PS Vita By JWink
There are several great additions to MLB 13 The Show including the new Postseason Mode.
From the 2012 version, there is not a huge leap in the animation, the realism was already top-notch and most modes remain the same. Those who already own MLB 12: The Show will be looking for a reason to buy the latest version besides just updated rosters. Fortunately, the postseason mode provides just that.
Some people are likely not going through an entire season while playing every game. In all likelihood, you are simulating at least some of your games and hoping you are a good enough general manager to get your team into the playoffs.
Even the Road to the Show mode feels a little too drawn out for an average person to keep interest. However, the Postseason brings the shortened time frame to those who love baseball. With this feature, you can customize the 10 teams that will be involved in the playoffs. You can now spend their time playing fewer games with a heightened intensity. While many of the features from franchise mode do not carry over, it still has the feel of your own team competing for a World Series.
Additionally, the mode features a different presentation from the regular season. The crowd is louder, the broadcast is more intense and even the announcers seem to be involved in the action. It truly captures the essence of October baseball and puts it into a video game.
Sports video games often have to find a perfect mixture of fun gameplay and a realistic experience. The overall game does a decent job of this, but the postseason mode makes it even better.
MLB 13: The Show is another winner in a series that's easily the best baseball sim out at the moment. MLB 13 suffers from the same feature crawl that many annual sports franchises do, meaning it's largely similar to last year's iteration with a player roster update. But the Road to the Show improvements, The Show Live mode, and the fielder's throwing meter make this a worthy upgrade from MLB 12 for either the player who wants to play game by game or for those who want to shorten the season and still get the feel of MLB in its entirety.
