Customer Reviews:
Excellent really fun game By jamartinez
This game is as fun as expected and you really learn to play guitar, its really challenging and that makes you get better faster than you would practicing by yourself.
It has a little lag but you can overcome it. if you are going to play it connected to a TV by HDMI, set the sound output for the PC speakers or headphones, the HDMI adds more lag.
the guitar is beautiful and all the bundle pack details are really polished.Best two hundred bucks I ever spent, by far By Kiri
When I first heard about this, I couldn't even believe it was real. A rhythm game using a real guitar, which taught you how to play guitar? It sounded too good to be true. But the more reviews I read and videos I watched, the more I became convinced that this was the real deal. I had wanted to learn to play guitar for a very long time, so when the PC version came out and I was able to afford it, I ordered it right away.
I am not even slightly disappointed. This thing has not only met my wildest expectations; it's exceeded them.
First of all, this bundle comes with an actual, honest-to-goodness six-string guitar, and a cable that's a standard jack on one side and USB on the other. It's a beautiful instrument, and while I'm no expert (I'm still learning, after all), I think that it feels and sounds great. The USB cable also works with amp programs/plugins like Guitar Rig, which is awesome.
The game itself is great at easing you into the basics of guitar playing. It starts by teaching you how to tune your guitar, set up volume, etc., and then teaches you some of the basics of strumming and playing notes. Then, almost before you know it, you're playing a real rock song -- a simplified version, at first, but the game starts to throw more notes at you as you get better, and then the next songs subtly introduce you to more techniques, and all of a sudden you're playing guitar for real. It's an amazing feeling.
Of course, if you're having trouble with a particular technique or cord or whatever, you can always go to the in-game tutorials, which give you helpful little videos and then test you on what you've just learned. You can also repeat riffs in songs that are giving you trouble, as in other rhythm games. Finally, there's the Guitarcade, which features a bunch of amusing little minigames each focused around a particular aspect of guitar playing. While I don't think that all of this is sufficient by itself to learn guitar (you still need to read up on techniques and notations outside of the game, and it helps a lot to practice chords and such in your spare time), Rocksmith will certainly get you started -- and the more you learn, the more challenging and addictive this game will get.
There's a nice eclectic mix of songs from several different subgenres of rock, and once you exhaust these (which will take a while -- learning guitar isn't easy!), there's a good amount of DLC to keep you playing longer if you're so inclined. As in all rhythm games, not all songs are equally enjoyable, and there are some that I'd just as soon never play again. But I do find the majority of the songs I've played so far to be very fun to play. Songs also have different arrangements such as "single note", "combo", "chord", etc., which helps with the difficulty curve as well as variety. And in this version of the game, you can also play bass arrangements (you can plug in a real bass for this, or you can simulate playing bass on your guitar). I just wish you could outright select difficulty levels instead of relying on the dynamic difficulty; you can manually set the difficulty of a song or riff to either the lowest level or the highest, but none in between, and that's annoying.
Playing on PC with a standard PC monitor, I've not experienced any issues with lag. I'm aware that this is a major problem on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, and that's exactly why I chose to get this for PC.
Bottom line: If you like rhythm games and you want to learn guitar, this is for you. I'm so glad I got this. Not only am I having fun playing a great game, but I'm learning an awesome new skill and reawakening a passion for music. This bundle is worth every cent for me.Good Way To Learn Guitar By P. S. Rockwell
If you want to learn how to play a guitar but don't want to pay for lessons, this is a good way to learn the basics. Essentially it is a game like Guitar Hero, but instead of using a game controller in the shape of a guitar, you use a real guitar. There are instructional videos, ways to record your progress, minigames, and about 50 songs to learn to play at varying levels of difficulty.
The guitar it comes with is an Epiphone Les Paul Jr. It's not a bad little guitar to learn on, or at least to play with until you decide if you really want to buy a better guitar. The bundled package comes with the guitar, the software, two picks, a guitar strap, the USB cable that connects to the guitar and your PC, and a short (about 5ft) guitar cable.
There are just a few problems with the game that you should be aware of before you buy.
1) There is the occasional lagging, but that's just a known problem and the nature of the beast in getting output from the guitar converted into stuff the computer can read and then applied.
2) You will have to set up a Steam account to register, update, and play this software.
3) The video and audio cards required are not supported if they are used on a laptop. I play this through my laptop (an HP Pavillion dv7) but expect no help or updates for them from UbiSoft.
4) It took nearly an hour to install the program from a single DVD.
Overall, this program is a lot of fun and while it will not replace a teacher, it is good for what it is and what it claims to be: a fun introduction to playing the guitar. Be forewarned though: it is addictive and you will burn through some hours before you know it.
