Product Description:
METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE takes the renowned METAL GEAR franchise into exciting new territory by focusing on delivering an all-new action experience unlike anything that has come before. Combining world-class development teams at Kojima Productions and Platinum Games, METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE brings two of the world's most respected teams together with a common goal of providing players with a fresh synergetic experience that combines the best elements of pure action and epic storytelling, all within the expansive MG universe. The game introduces Raiden as the central character; a child soldier transformed into a half-man, half-machine cyborg ninja, equipped with a high-frequency katana blade and a soul fueled by revenge. In the near future, cyborg technology has become commonplace throughout society. Three years have passed since the collapse of the Patriots system that had been secretly controlling the global power balance from the shadows. However, peace remains elusive. The dissemination of cybernetic technology has triggered instability and conflict as those who control the trade gain increasing power. Furthermore, large 'Private Military Companies', or PMC's, that had been supported and controlled by the Patriots have collapsed, spawning countless rogue entities with origins to larger criminal organizations. These renegade PMCs employing cyborg technology have become increasingly more disruptive shifting policy and power at will. As a member of the peace-keeping PMC 'Maverick Security', Raiden lives by the mantra of protecting and saving lives. But as the world plunges further into asymmetric warfare, the only path that leads him forward is rooted in resolving his past, and carving through anything that stands in his way.

Customer Reviews:

Incredible Spin-Off By D. Morrison
First off, I am a fan of the Metal Gear series dating back to the NES and MSX days. I have played and completed every Metal Gear game to date (with the exception of this one, only a few hours in), and I truly love the series.

Unlike the geniuses who purposely rate games one star, I understand that this is a spin-off of the Metal Gear Solid series. Raiden has played a pivotal role in the Metal Gear universe since the Big Shell Incident in MGS2. His story was carried out through MGS4 and continues in his own spin-off game, Metal Gear Rising. More of his traumatic past is revealed in this game, and I think it's great that Kojima tasked Platinum Games with developing MGR.

Gameplay: Fast-paced, Bayonetta-style action. I know to newcomers that may sound off putting, but keep in mind Raiden's particular set of skills. The gameplay is very fitting of Raiden's abilities, and truly, the game still feels very much like it's a Metal Gear game.

Controls: They feel very natural and responsive. I was skeptical of the analog blade controls, but they really work extremely well and give you the feeling of actually slicing your foes to bits.

Story: Over-the-top. No spoilers, but it's engaging, mostly ridiculous, and extremely entertaining. That's something that has been present since Metal Gear 1.

Limited Edition Content: The high-frequency katana blade plasma lamp is tremendous. It will be proudly displayed on my work desk. The steel case is your standard steel game case and the artwork on it looks really nice. And the soundtrack, also just kind of a standard throw in, but it's up to par. Really though, the plasma lamp is the meat of this edition. I can't imagine these will be around forever, so collectors should probably jump on this pretty quickly.

So, if you were on the fence about getting this game, download the demo and play it. As for people looking to get the Limited Edition, I have to assume that people willing to spend $149 for it have probably already bought it and know what they are getting into.

As for the review trolls, seriously... Is this still a fun thing for people to do?

It became my favourite Metal Gear! By GracefulDemon
So, before anyone throws a plasma lamp at my head, let me say that MGS2 used to be my favourite. Do you understand where I'm coming from? Good.

With that out of the way, I was excited for this game - very excited - but after reading some hateful reviews I started doubting it a little bit... I am ashamed I even thought of doubting.

This game surprised me. The story is deep, emotional, and just silly like MGS, but the big difference for me was that I was never bored by it, I never felt the need to skip a cinematic because it was a huge info-dump. There are no info-dumps in this game. No, things are presented as they are and the foreshadow is left for you to understand; it is never boring, it is always a wonder to watch (and I am on my 3rd play-through) - it is actually so good that when it ended, I automatically clicked "continue" (aka +New Game) and when I came to my senses I was already fighting RAY. XD This game is a blast - in a very good way!

One complain I have is the camera; not exactly terrible but it can be annoying sometimes.
The gameplay, as I am sure everyone is aware, is a dream. I cannot praise it well enough. The feeling of control you have when cutting an enemy anyway you like, the ability to go through a hall, filled with UGs that could kill you in a beat, completely unnoticed, or the excitement/insanity of using Ripper Mode (I can't even explain this one)... like I said, I cannot praise this game enough.

If you enjoy action games with a great story, awesome soundtrack, an insane protagonist, and amazing gameplay, then this game is for you. It really doesn't matter if you're not a Metal Gear fan, you will enjoy it regardless, I am sure of it!

As to the limited edition, it came in one piece, all shiny and electric. Unfortunately, my promotional code doesn't seem to work.

P.S. BUY THIS GAME. PLAY THIS GAME. LOVE THIS GAME.

The Metal Gear Series Gets Some New Blood By Will Ryan
I want to start this review by stating something that I feel is necessary. I have played the entire Metal Gear Solid series, from back in the PSOne days. In addition to that, I actually didn't mind most of the aspects of Raiden's character that most people hated in Metal Gear Solid 2. In fact, I found him to be a genuinely understandable protagonist, and the whining, while annoying for some, is probably close to the reaction most of us would have in that situation, whether we'd like to admit it or not. However, in Metal Gear Solid 4 (which featured the best gameplay of the series...but nowhere near enough of it) I thought he was wasted at best, and ludicrously portrayed at worst (seriously...wtf is with the lightning god scene...I don't even). I always wondered why they took a fantastic character design and wasted it on a horrendously homoerotic scene with Vamp (last time I promise but...white blood...wtf?). I knew that when done right, Raiden could be a badass, because the potential was always there. Well clearly Kojima didn't know how to execute this at all because he almost completely scrapped the project when neither he nor any of his designers could create the "cutting" combat system that would make Raiden into said badass Cyborg Ninja. Thankfully, his friends at Platinum Games offered to helm the project just after Kojima cancelled the original "Metal Gear Solid: Rising", and have delivered what I consider to be the most exciting, entertaining title in the franchise. Don't get me wrong, I loved how well the Tactical Espionage Action of MGS developed and evolved over time, but it was seriously done to death. And the cutscenes were starting to make it boring. This game could not be a more polar opposite of everything that Solid Snake's Metal Gear was, and I praise Platinum Games for this. It's a total departure--a major risk in terms of alienating the fan base--but the creators of Bayonetta have made one hell of a game. I've seen this described as a "button masher" and a "God of War clone" and in my opinion, this is definitely not the case. If you try to mindlessly slash and button mash your way through every encounter, the game will punish you with well-implemented difficulty (unique, detailed fighting styles for every enemy and boss), even on Normal mode. The controls are smooth enough to allow casual players to pick it up and just play, and the surprisingly deep story accommodates people looking to get into this game without having to lug around the baggage of the entire MGS series. I cannot remember the last time I felt so exhilarated playing a video game, because the pumping metal score makes every combat adrenaline-packed, and every boss battle an epic showdown. Ninja Gaiden fans already have their games, and I'm sure they love them, but leave it to Platinum Games and Hideo Kojima to deliver the first video game experience where I actually felt like a REAL ninja fighting other REAL ninjas. This game demands to be played, and it couldn't have been executed better.
