A surprisingly good Transformers game By ZX 1971
While High Moon Studios is receiving all of the accolades for their two Cybertron games for 360/PS3, Nintendo owners now have a Transformers game to be proud of also, courtesy of Activision and NowPro. Based on the CG animated show on the Hub network, Transformers Prime The Game gives gamers a full story voice-acted by the actual cast, topped by Peter Cullen and Frank Welker who have resumed their roles from the original 1984 cartoon as Optimus Prime and Megatron. Even though the show is produced by the same people who produce the much panned Michael Bay movies, there are only a few similarities between the movie and the show this game is based on.
The story mode is the main game, where you are assigned a preselected Autobot for each level. You'll start as Optimus Prime in a brief introductory level, then move on to Arcee, Bulkhead, and Bumblebee. Eventually you'll even play as Ratchet, although he usually stays behind in the show, since he's more of a surgeon than a fighter. Except for the driving parts of the levels, you can transform between robot and vehicle mode at will by pressing the X button. You can lock on to a target by pressing the L button, and fire with the Y button, or quickly tap the Y button twice to charge up a shot and then release it. There are melee combos you can perform with the A button (your primary melee button) and B button (used alone to jump.) The R button gives you a shield in robot mode, and a temporary boost of speed in vehicle mode. If your boost meter is filled, you can activate a power-up that will grant you stronger melee attacks by tapping the bottom touch screen icon.
There is also an in-game map that will show you where power-ups and artifacts are located. Each stage has 2 or 3 artifacts, which will grant you character info in the gallery mode, or make a new character available in multiplayer mode (which can be played against the system AI or wirelessly against a group of friends). You'll also gain access to new areas in multiplayer mode after you clear them in story mode. Multiplayer mode has three different kinds of matches, but again, the story mode is the main part of the game. On a side note, there is virtually non-existent 3D support for this game, which is nearly identical to the Wii game, so you may as well keep the 3D slider all the way down to off.
At the end of each level, you will be ranked according to how well you did in meeting the three goals (beating the time limit, collecting energon, and suffering no more than the allowed damage for that level.) Meet none of them and get a C rank, 1 get a B rank, 2 get an A rank, and all 3 get an S rank. Also, there are 70 emblems to be awarded, based on factors such as simply beating the boss of the level, earning an A rank or above, finding a multiple of 5 artifacts, or knocking at least 10 Vehicons (Decepticon clones that tranform into cars, tanks, or helicopters)off of a cliff. These are nice little rewards that help with the replay factor of this game. There is also concept artwork to be unlocked. All of the bosses consist of the Decepticons from the show, such as Starscream, Soundwave, Knockout, Airachnid, and Dreadwing.(Quiet! No show spoilers here please!) There is a new Decepticon introduced also, who has ties to a certain major Transformers villain.
All of the cinemas between levels are rendered by the system (no CG, except for the opening intro which is the same as the show), but still look well-done. There is also a cinema mode where you can watch all of the unlocked movies. Jack, Raf, and Miko (I know, *cringe*) are all part of the story too. It really does feel like you're playing out an episode of the show, with equal parts platforming, driving, and run & gun. This game is a sleeper hit, which may unfortunately get passed over between Professor Layton and Paper Mario.Son By PJ
I got this for son who is now for the moment into transformers and going strong for now just have to wait for me to win lotto to get all the ones he wants LOL,,,Far more enjoyable than I would have imagined By A. Toro
After watching videos of the abysmal Wii u version, I noticed the graphics on the 3ds looked almost better, and I was right! Featuring all the voice actors from the show, and a very easy pick up and play style of mission structure, THIS is the version to get. Fun for all ages and fans of transformers won't be disappointed by this simple, yet more than functional Transformers game. My only complaint is that you can't lead your shots at targets during battle, often requiring you to get up close to finish them off. Otherwise this is a great portable transformers experience for all ages. All Hail Megatron
